Preamble
The Oracle/PLSQL TRUNC function returns a date truncated to a specific unit.
Oracle/PLSQL syntax of TRUNC function
TRUNC ( date_id, [ format_id ] )
Parameters and function arguments
- date_id – date for truncation.
- format_id – the unit of measurement, which is used for truncation. If the format parameter is omitted, TRUNC will cut the date to the value of the day so that any hours, minutes, or seconds will be truncated. The acceptable format parameters are shown below:
| Unit | Actual format parameters |
| Year | SYYYY, YYYY, YEAR, SYEAR, YYY, YY, Y |
| ISO year | IYYY, IY, I |
| Quarter | Q |
| Month | MONTH, MON, MM, RM |
| Week | WW |
| IW | IW |
| W | W |
| Day | DDD, DD, J |
| Beginning day of the week | DAY, DY, D |
| Hour | HH, HH12, HH24 |
| One minute | MI |
The TRUNC function (for dates) returns the date.
The TRUNC function can be used in the following versions of Oracle/PLSQL
Oracle 12c, Oracle 11g, Oracle 10g, Oracle 9i, Oracle 8i
Example for dates
Let’s consider some examples of the TRUNC function and learn how to use the TRUNC function in Oracle/PLSQL.
SELECT TRUNC(TO_DATE('31.08.2014'), 'YEAR') FROM DUAL;
--Result: 01.01.2014
SELECT TRUNC(TO_DATE('31.08.2019'), 'Q') FROM DUAL;
--Result: 01.07.2019
SELECT TRUNC(TO_DATE('31.08.2019'), 'MONTH') FROM DUAL;
--Result: 01.08.2019
SELECT TRUNC(TO_DATE('31.08.2019'), 'DDD') FROM DUAL;
--Result: 31.08.2019
SELECT TRUNC(TO_DATE('31.08.2019'), 'DAY') FROM DUAL;
--Result: 25.08.2019
