Preamble
The PostgreSQL position function returns the substring location in a string.
Syntax of the position function in PostgreSQL
position ( substring in string )
Parameters and function arguments
- substring is a substring to search in the string.
- string – String to search.
Note:
- The first position in the string is 1.
- If the substring is not found in the string, the position function will return 0.
The position function can be used in future versions of PostgreSQL
PostgreSQL 11, PostgreSQL 10, PostgreSQL 9.6, PostgreSQL 9.5, PostgreSQL 9.4, PostgreSQL 9.3, PostgreSQL 9.2, PostgreSQL 9.1, PostgreSQL 9.0, PostgreSQL 8.4.
Let’s look at some examples of position functions to understand how to use a position function in PostgreSQL.
For example:
SELECT position('G' in 'Google.com');
--Result: 1
SELECT position('g' in 'Google.com');
--Result: 4
SELECT position('e' in 'Google.com');
--Result: 6
SELECT position('X' in 'Google.com');
--Result: 0
