Launch of GitHub Sponsors for Companies
Open-source software developers aren’t in it for the money. Open-source software is essential to much of the technology we use daily, from the guts of Android to popular languages like Python and PHP to commercial solutions like Hubspot’s CRM and Trello’s project management service.

GitHub collaborators Sponsors for businesses
GitHub Sponsors, a scheme in which anyone can invest in open source developers through recurring monthly donations made directly on Github, was established last year. GitHub adds a “Sponsor me” button to a developer’s or open-source project’s repositories when they sign up for the program. It allows open source projects to advertise their fundraising strategies, such as individual developer contributions or services such as Patreon, Tidelift, Ko-fi, or Open Collective.
Millions of dollars have been donated to open source projects as a result of this scheme. Many engineers earn six figures through GitHub Sponsors and even more consider making it their full-time profession to support their communities.
At GitHub Universe 2020, we’re excited to announce a partnership with GitHub to introduce GitHub Sponsors for companies, allowing entire companies and organizations—not just individuals—to invest directly in the open-source developers and projects that we rely on. We’re ecstatic to join a fantastic group of corporations who have already pledged to invest in open-source projects through GitHub Sponsors.
Our dedication to open source
The world operates on software, and while we work to make the world a better place, we need a perfect internet. It is something that no single corporation can accomplish on its own. We’re all on the same quest, believing it all starts with open source.
Many open-source projects have benefited from our contributions, including:
OpenTelemetry
We contribute to the OpenTelemetry project by developing specifications, implementing sections of the specifications in language SDKs, assessing other contributors’ pull requests, and serving as a maintainer in the OpenTelemetry subprojects.
We work on this project as pull request approvers and contributors and actively contribute to the definition and discussions to help it evolve.
The Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) has accepted OpenTelemetry as a Silver Member.
Working Group on Distributed Tracing of the World Wide Web Consortium
The W3C Distributed Tracing Working Group establishes guidelines for transferring traces and context between tracing technologies.
AdoptOpenJDK
AdoptOpenJDK is the community and code behind the build farm that creates free OpenJDK (Java) binaries of excellent quality.
We support AdoptOpenJDK as a Silver Sponsor and contribute to technical work on the project. We also utilize AdoptOpenJDK binaries in our JVM-based services and advocate them as a better alternative to Oracle’s binaries.
Our commitment to open source developers is another step forward in our mission to strengthen developer communities and ensure that open source software remains valued and sustainable for everyone in the software industry. We’d love to have you join us on our journey, so please stop by GitHub Universe and say hello. We’re hoping to see you there.
