The PostgreSQL function age returns the number of years, months, and days between two dates.
Syntax of the function age in PostgreSQL
age( [date1,] date2 )
Parameters and function arguments
- date1 and date2 – Two dates to calculate the difference between.
Calculation
The age function performs two different calculations depending on what parameters are provided.
If date1 is specified, the age function performs the following calculation:
date1 - date2
If date1 is NOT specified, the age function performs the following calculation:
current date - date2
Note:
- The age function returns the result in one of the following formats:

xxx mon(s) xxx day(s)
xxx day(s)

SELECT age(timestamp '2019-01-01'); -- current date: '2019-04-23'.
--Result: 3 mons 22 days
SELECT age(timestamp '2019-04-25', timestamp '2019-01-01');
--Result: 3 mons 24 days
SELECT age(timestamp '2019-04-23', timestamp '2019-04-12');
--Result: 11 days
SELECT age(current_date, timestamp '2018-01-12');
--Result: 1 year 3 mons 11 days
