Preamble
The Oracle/PLSQL RTRIM function removes all specified characters from the right side of the string.
Syntax of the Oracle/PLSQL RTRIM function
RTRIM( string1_id, [ trim_string_id ] )
Parameters and function arguments
- string1_id – is a string that is shortened on the right side.
- trim_string_id – string that will be removed from the right side of string1. If this parameter is not specified, the LTRIM function will remove all spaces from string1.
The RTRIM function returns a string value.
See also the LTRIM and TRIM functions.
The RTRIM function can be used in the following versions of Oracle/PLSQL
|
Oracle 12c, Oracle 11g, Oracle 10g, Oracle 9i, Oracle 8i
|
Let’s consider some examples of the RTRIM function and learn how to use the RTRIM function in Oracle PLSQL.
SELECT RTRIM('abcd ') FROM DUAL;
--Result: 'abcd'
SELECT RTRIM('abcd ', ' ') FROM DUAL;
--Result: 'abcd'
SELECT RTRIM('123000', '0') FROM DUAL;
--Result: '123'
SELECT RTRIM('abcd123123', '123') FROM DUAL;
--Result: 'abcd'
SELECT RTRIM('123abcd123', '123') FROM DUAL;
--Result: '123abcd'
SELECT RTRIM('abcdxyxzyyyyy', 'xyz') FROM DUAL;
--Result: 'abcd'
SELECT RTRIM('abcd6372', '0123456789') FROM DUAL;
--Result: 'abcd'
The RTRIM function can be applied to remove the template, but not as shown in the following example.
SQL>SELECT RTRIM('Abcdxyxyzyyyxx', 'xyz')FROM DUAL;
--Result: 'Abcd'
This actually removes individual occurrences of ‘x’, ‘y’, and ‘z’ unlike the “xyz” pattern.
The RTRIM function can also be used to remove all end numbers as shown in the following example.
SQL> SELECT RTRIM('Abcd6372', '0123456789') FROM DUAL;
--Result: 'Abcd'
In this example, any combination of numbers from 0 to 9 was listed in the trim_string parameter. No matter in what order the numbers appear in string1, all end numbers will be deleted using the RTRIM function.
