Preamble
The Oracle / PLSQL TRIM function removes all specified characters from the beginning or end of a string.
Function Oracle / PLSQL TRIM syntax
TRIM( [ [ LEADING_id | TRAILING_id | BOTH_id ] trim_character_id FROM ] string1_id )
Parameters and arguments
- LEADING_id – will remove trim_character from the beginning of string1.
- TRAILING_id – removes trim_character from the end of string1.
- BOTH_id – removes trim_character from the beginning and end of string1.
- trim_character_id – removes trim_character from the beginning and end of string1. If this parameter is not specified, TRIM function will remove spaces from string1.
- string1_id – is a string to be deleted.
The TRIM function returns a string value.
If you do not select a value for the first parameter (LEADING, TRAILING, BOTH), TRIM will delete trim_character from the beginning and end of string1.

SQL> SELECT TRIM(' Adam ') FROM DUAL;
--Result: Adam
SQL> SELECT TRIM(' '' FROM ' Adam ') FROM DUAL;
--Result: Adam
SQL> SELECT TRIM(LEADING '0' FROM '000123') FROM DUAL;
--Result: 123
SQL> SELECT TRIM(TRAILING '1' FROM 'Adam') FROM DUAL;
--Result: Adam
SQL> SELECT TRIM(BOTH '1' FROM '123Adam111') FROM DUAL;
--Result: 23Adam
